Tony Iommi’s From the Dark Ends a 21-Year Solo Silence

Tony Iommi has not put his own name on the front of an album since 2005. On 29 July he ended that run: BMG confirmed Tony Iommi’s From the Dark for a 23 October worldwide release, led by a single called “World Alone” that premiered at a global streaming event in Birmingham, a short walk from the canal bridge the city named after his band.

The length of the gap is the story. Tony Iommi’s From the Dark is his first solo record since Fused, and his first studio album of any kind since Black Sabbath’s 13 in 2013. “It’s an album we’ve really enjoyed making,” Iommi said in the announcement. “We’re not trying to prove anything – it’s a great album, it rocks!”

What Broke a Twenty-One-Year Silence

Iommi’s solo catalogue is short by design. Fused, made with Glenn Hughes, arrived in 2005 and then the guitarist’s output ran almost entirely through Black Sabbath, ending with 13 in 2013. Everything after that was the band’s long goodbye.

That goodbye had a hard stop. On 5 July 2025, Iommi played Villa Park in Birmingham alongside Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for Back to the Beginning, the farewell show NBC News described as a ten-hour marathon that drew some 45,000 people to the stadium and another 5.8 million online. Ozzy Osbourne, seated on a bat-and-skull throne for much of it, died seventeen days later on 22 July 2025 at the age of 76, CNN reported at the time.

A year on, the guitarist who wrote the riffs that started the genre has a record with nobody else’s band name on it. Iommi has not framed it as a statement, and the quote in the press announcement is deliberately unbothered: the album exists because the sessions were enjoyable, not because anything needed settling.

Why World Alone Premiered Beside a Birmingham Canal

The single did not get a standard streaming drop. According to Blabbermouth, “World Alone” premiered at a special global streaming event staged in Iommi’s hometown, a stone’s throw from Black Sabbath Bridge – the crossing over the canal that Birmingham opened as a civic tribute to the band in 2019.

Choosing that spot puts the record in a specific frame before a note plays. It is a Birmingham album by a Birmingham guitarist, launched at the piece of municipal infrastructure the city built to say so.

The song itself is described in the announcement as a thunderous rock track that moves on a barrage of flying riffs and solos over a driving rhythm section, topped with what the label calls the powerful rock operatics of its singer. The accompanying video builds a retrofuture dystopia around a protagonist named The Believer, dropped into a twisted video game and playing for his life.

The Singer Iommi Waited Two Decades to Record With

The most consequential name on the credits is Jorn Lande. The Norwegian vocalist co-wrote all eight tracks, and as Loudwire noted, the pair first wrote together back in 2005 – a project that produced nothing at the time.

Their real connection runs through Ronnie James Dio. After Dio’s death in 2010, his Heaven and Hell bandmates Iommi, Butler and Vinny Appice played a memorial set at London’s High Voltage Festival with Lande and Glenn Hughes handling vocals. Lande released “Song For Ronnie” within weeks of Dio’s passing and later a full tribute album.

Lande, now 58, arrives with a deep and unusually varied CV. He fronted Vagabond in the early nineties, sang alongside Whitesnake alumni Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody in The Snakes, joined Masterplan with Helloween’s Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch, traded verses with Symphony X’s Russell Allen and worked inside the sprawling Avantasia project. A stint as Yngwie Malmsteen’s touring singer in 2000 ended before the run did.

He has been open about where the pull came from. “In 1973, my folks came home with the Sweet single ‘Ballroom Blitz’, and that was when I first started getting into rock music,” Lande told My Global Mind in an interview Loudwire revisited, before moving on to Free, Whitesnake and Judas Priest and then finding Dio. What stuck was not the volume but the refusal to chase a trend: “I realized that Ronnie James Dio would stay true to something that he loved to do.” Pairing that instinct with the guitarist who wrote the riffs Dio once sang over is the most interesting bet on the record.

A Rhythm Section From Outside the Metal Circuit

The band behind them is less predictable. Bass duties go to Becky Baldwin, known for her work with Danish veterans Mercyful Fate and with Fury. The drum stool goes to Karl Brazil, whose touring credits sit almost entirely outside metal – Robbie Williams, James Blunt and Feeder.

That is not a heritage-metal line-up, and it reads as a deliberate choice rather than an accident of availability. Behind the desk, Iommi co-produced with Mike Exeter, his longtime creative partner, co-writer and engineer, whose history with the guitarist runs back through the later Sabbath records.

What the Eight Tracks Point Toward

Details in the label’s track-by-track are sparse but specific. The record opens with “Over the Violent Sun”, built on a classic down-tuned Iommi riff, before reaching “World Alone” at track three. “Beyond the Dead” changes the pace with a stately, sinister figure threaded through orchestration. “Stormwatcher” leans on nautical metaphor and the idea of new horizons, and is paired in scale with “Death Wake”. The eighth and final track is titled “Legacy”.

The label describes the finished sound as crystalline, vibrant and enormous, which is a promise about production as much as songwriting. Iommi has spent the past two decades working on records where the low end was carved out for a specific singer; here the arrangement has been built around a vocalist with a far wider range than the one most listeners associate with these riffs, and the orchestration on “Beyond the Dead” suggests the album is not simply reheating a formula.

Two previously released instrumentals, “Scent of Dark” and “Deified”, return as bonus tracks. Lande’s lyrics across the album run to dystopian imagery and the fleeting nature of human experience, which is a long way from the occult iconography that made the guitarist’s name and closer to the existential register Dio favoured.

As Loudwire’s announcement coverage laid out, the release lands on BMG across vinyl variants, deluxe CD editions and digital.

Where a New Iommi Record Lands Now

The timing is favourable in a way it would not have been a decade ago. Heritage metal is not a nostalgia sideline on the current touring circuit – it is the main draw, with the genre’s founding acts filling stadiums that most new rock bands cannot approach. Our coverage of Iron Maiden’s fiftieth-anniversary run traced the same pattern from a different angle: audiences are turning out in volume for the bands that built the form.

What Tony Iommi’s From the Dark does not do is reconvene anything. There is no Sabbath reunion attached, no surviving-members billing, no anniversary hook. It is a solo album with a new singer, a rhythm section drawn from outside the usual pool and a release date in late October. Whether it holds its place in the Iommi catalogue is a question for 23 October – and given the guitarist’s own framing, he does not appear to be treating it as a test.

The commercial setup is conventional and broad: BMG is putting the record out across multiple vinyl variants, deluxe CD editions and digital, which is the standard playbook for a heritage act whose audience still buys physical copies. For a guitarist whose catalogue has been reissued and boxed repeatedly over the last fifteen years, a genuinely new studio album is the rarer product.

Premier Guitar carried the same announcement to the player audience the same day, which is its own signal: this is being pitched as much to guitarists as to metal fans.
