Ordinary Is the Brigade Single That Enters the Indie Rock Conversation

A Bangor Two Piece, Two Songs Deep, and the Room of Players Behind Them

Ordinary arrived on 28 August 2026, six weeks after the first Brigade single. That is a short run to be judging a catalogue on. It is also the most interesting thing about the band right now. Two songs is not much to go on, but it is enough to see what these two chose to spend their studio time on, and the answer is not what a new guitar band usually reaches for.

Brigade’s music is in the playlist below, and the band’s full run of coverage sits on the Brigade profile. Ordinary reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Give both songs a listen, then read on.

The Brigade Catalogue So Far, And Where The Ordinary Single Lands

Brigade is Mel Browne and Jack Stoops, out of Bangor on the County Down coast. The band later took on Andrew Armstrong and Zac Carlisle, so the two piece that wrote these songs is now a bigger live proposition than the credits suggest.

The catalogue opens with Hear You Say, released on 17 July 2026. The band describe it as a song about two people working through the ordinary pressures of a shared life. That means money, self-doubt, growing responsibility and the fear of drifting apart. The resolution is small and deliberate. Sometimes the only useful thing to say is that nobody is doing this alone.

Ordinary followed on 28 August. It ships as a two track single, with Hear You Say sitting behind it as track two. So the pairing is a considered piece of sequencing rather than a filler B-side. A band with two songs to its name has chosen to present them together, which asks a listener to hear the second in light of the first.

What Changed On Ordinary

The obvious shift is length. Ordinary runs three minutes forty five, a good half minute tighter than its predecessor, and the writing is correspondingly less patient. Where Hear You Say takes its time building toward reassurance, the newer song gets to its point faster. It trusts the chorus to hold the weight.

The title is doing work as well. Calling a song Ordinary and then pairing it with a track about financial strain and self-doubt is not an accident. Both songs are about the unremarkable version of a hard week, and neither reaches for a bigger subject than that. For a band two releases old, that is a narrower lane than most choose. It is also a more defensible one.

The Room Behind Both Records

The credits are where this catalogue gets more interesting than its length suggests. Hear You Say was written and performed by Browne and Stoops, but the record around them was not made alone. King Cedar plays acoustic guitar on it. Ross Bickerstaff plays drums. Madi McCullough and Barry Locke sing backing vocals. Additional production, mixing and mastering came from Ryan McGroarty at Beauty Sleep Studios.

That is a full session for a debut single. A two piece that books a drummer, a second guitarist and two backing vocalists is not making bedroom recordings and calling them demos. Instead they are building a record that has to hold up next to other records.

McGroarty’s involvement matters for the same reason. Beauty Sleep Studios sits inside the Northern Irish scene rather than outside it, so the production choices come from someone who knows what a room in Belfast sounds like. The result is a mix that leaves the vocal forward and does not over-compress the drums. That is why the songs read as unfussy rather than thin.

Inhaler are the nearest useful comparison from the current Irish guitar-band run. Not because the two sound alike, but because both take a plain lyric and let the arrangement carry the size. That approach lives or dies on the session, which is why the personnel list above is the real story of Brigade’s first six weeks.

From the RockCharts.News curator team: “Two singles is not a catalogue yet, but the credits on the first one tell you what kind of catalogue it is going to be. A new two piece that hires a drummer and two backing vocalists is planning further ahead than most.”

Where To Hear The Ordinary Single And Follow Brigade

For a listener the entry point is either song, and the two track packaging makes that decision for you. Start with Ordinary for the tighter writing, then let Hear You Say explain what the band is actually about.

You can hear Ordinary on Spotify and Apple Music, and both singles are up on Bandcamp.
