The single “Call Me” by Air-Ik is a cover of the classic Blondie song of the same name. The artist says he was inspired to cover this song after hearing the original as the theme for the recently aired Showtime series American Gigolo. After imagining it slowed down and darker, he decided to record it that way.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, where he currently resides, the artist has been working solo under his alias Air-Ik (his current moniker) since 2020, however, he already had a great experience with rock music, resulting from his involvement in several successful bands that have been in existence since the 1990s. Let’s give him a well-deserved adjective, Air-Ik is a rock legend!
As mentioned, the producers of PopHits.Co described his sound as “alternative rock” but exploring his portfolio they discovered something with more variety—it’s got some garage rock in it, but there are also elements of classic rock, art rock, singer-songwriter styles…
He has definitely left his mark on indie music over the years with his unique style of blending genres together into something special. We noticed that Air-Ik has been making waves in the indie rock scene for a while now. His latest single, Call Me, is a cover of the Blondie classic – which you can listen to at the end of this article – and it’s pretty much perfect!
Call Me is a classic, but Air-Ik’s version starts off with a different and slow guitar riff that sounds like it could have come right out of the 80s or 90s—but then it builds into something much more modern as Air-Ik’s vocals begin.
He sings in a deep, smooth tone that is perfectly suited to this cover of an old classic. The whole thing is kind of like listening to an old rock ballad that has been remixed by some sort of dark-pop genius—and it’s amazing!
The reason I say “kind of” when describing this track is because even though it has a lot of elements that remind me of other songs I’ve heard before, there’s something about it that feels completely original and unique at the same time.
