Riccardo Moccia Welds Death and Melodic Metal Together on “Constructive”

The Italian Metal Artist’s 2021 Single Still Earns Its Place in Heavy Rotation

Riccardo Moccia released constructive on 14 December 2021, and the track still does something most metal singles do not. It carries death metal weight and melodic metal detail in the same arrangement without letting either one win. Almost five years on, that balance is why it keeps turning up in our listening.

You can listen to our full playlist which contains the artists’ music, and know more about the artist’s work by scrolling down the page.

Riccardo Moccia Blends Death Metal Weight With Melodic Metal Detail

Death metal and melodic metal pull in opposite directions. One wants force, compression and speed. The other wants space for a line to develop. Most artists working across both end up alternating between them, giving you a heavy section and then a melodic one.

constructive does not alternate. Riccardo Moccia builds the aggression and the melody into the same passages, so the intricate writing sits inside the heavy playing rather than beside it. That is a harder construction to pull off. It is also the reason the track reads as composed rather than assembled.

The heavy metal element is the third piece, and it keeps the whole thing legible. Pure death metal can bury a melody under sheer density. Here the arrangement leaves the melodic writing audible without softening the impact, which is exactly the trick a listener wants from this genre combination.

Where Constructive Sits Inside The Sensed Concept Album About The Universe

The track is not a standalone. constructive was the second single from Sensed, a concept album built around the evolution of the universe, and that framing changes what the song is doing.

A concept record about cosmic evolution gives a metal writer licence to work at scale. It also imposes a discipline, since each track has to carry a piece of the argument rather than simply exist. Hearing constructive with that context makes the density feel purposeful. The intricate writing is not showing off, it is doing structural work.

“When I created ‘constructive,’ my goal was to forge something that truly represented the intensity and complexity I felt within the metal landscape,” said Riccardo Moccia. “Seeing it continue to connect with people years after its release is incredibly rewarding.”

That intention is legible in the finished track, which matters. Plenty of concept albums explain themselves in interviews and nowhere else.

What The Metal Press Said About This Track Back In 2021

constructive did not slip out unnoticed. It picked up coverage across the metal blog circuit on release, and the writing about it is still findable.

Edgar Allan Poets covered the single directly when it landed. Headbangers News, writing from Brazil, framed his work as experimental metal, which is a fair reading of what the genre blend is actually doing. York Calling went further and ran a full interview with him in early 2022. Eat This Rock Blog and Metal Daily Songs both picked the track up as well.

That is a wide spread for an independent metal artist working outside a label system. It tells you the track travelled on its own merits.

If your listening runs through Opeth, this will make sense immediately. Mikael Akerfeldt spent a career proving that growled aggression and intricate composition can occupy the same song, and Moccia works the same seam. In Flames are the second reference point, specifically the melodic death metal template where a lead line has to survive underneath a heavy rhythm section. Gojira are the third, less for the sound than for the approach. They built their reputation on records where a large conceptual idea drives the writing rather than decorating it.

The RockCharts.News curator team: “Catalogue metal is a hard sell, because the genre moves fast and most 2021 singles sound like 2021. This one does not date, mainly because the writing is structural rather than fashionable. It would land the same way if it came out tomorrow.”

Stream Constructive And Follow Riccardo Moccia Across Every Metal Platform He Uses

The listener this is built for wants complexity without losing impact. They are not looking for technical metal that forgets to hit, and they are not looking for heaviness with nothing underneath.

constructive is available across all major streaming services. You can hear it on Spotify, follow his Spotify artist page, and find his wider catalogue on Apple Music and SoundCloud.

Keep up with Riccardo Moccia across platforms: YouTube channel, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
