System of a Down announced one stadium show for 2027 on 19 October. By the evening of 23 October it had three. The Los Angeles band will play the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on 5, 6 and 10 June 2027, with Pierce The Veil opening the first two nights and Gojira the third, and general tickets for all three go on sale on Monday 26 October at 10am Pacific time.
The first date was billed as the band’s only North American concert of 2027. Four days and two additions later, it is a three-night stand in a stadium that holds more than 89,700 people in some configurations, and every extra night was added before a single general-sale ticket had been sold.
How One Night Became Three
The run started with a tease. Over the weekend before the announcement, the band projected images onto buildings around Los Angeles, and on 19 October it confirmed a single show at the Rose Bowl on 5 June 2027 with Pierce The Veil in support, Consequence reported. It is the first time the band has been booked at the stadium, and the date was presented as its only North American concert of the year.
That framing lasted until the presale. Registered fans could buy from the morning of 23 October, and demand pushed a second show, on 6 June with the same opener, onto the schedule that morning, according to theprp. A third, on 10 June with Gojira, followed later the same day. Consequence confirmed the expanded run, with tickets sold through Ticketmaster and the general sale held back until Monday.
Vocalist Serj Tankian kept his reaction short. “This is crazy. We are floored!” he said after the third date was confirmed.
The Numbers Behind a Three-Night Stand
The Rose Bowl’s capacity is the figure that makes the jump notable. Theprp puts it at more than 89,700 in certain production configurations. Stage layouts vary and no attendance figure has been announced, but if all three nights ran close to that configuration, the run would hold somewhere near 270,000 people. That is a single-city booking on the scale of a full arena tour.
The sequence also matters. The second and third nights came out of the presale alone, inside one day, with the open sale still three days away. Whatever Monday brings, the band has already turned a one-off into a residency-sized commitment in its home city.
The scale also changes the economics of the night itself. A stadium bill with a different opener on the third date gives the promoter two separate products to sell inside the same week, and the band a home-city stand that sits in the calendar like a festival of its own.
Where Pasadena Sits in the Wider Run
The Rose Bowl dates sit at the end of a long run of stadium shows. Lambgoat lists the announced itinerary: the band plays Sick New World Texas in Fort Worth on 24 October, then a southern hemisphere stadium leg with Faith No More in 2027, starting at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on 15 January and moving through Accor Stadium in Sydney on 22 January, Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on 27 January and Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on 1 February, before closing at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on 7 February.
That follows a European summer run that marked the band’s first headline tour dates in Europe since 2017. The run opened on 29 June at Strawberry Arena in Solna, Sweden, with a 29-song set and Queens of the Stone Age and Acid Bath in support, NME reported, and it included two nights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, the band’s first London shows in more than a decade. Between Sweden and London the run moved through France, Italy and Germany in July, with the same two support acts on every date.
Read together, the schedule is built almost entirely around stadiums and large festivals. Three nights in one city fits that pattern, and it is the largest single-city commitment on the list.
Gojira and Pierce The Veil on the Bill
The support line-up splits the run in two. Pierce The Veil open on 5 and 6 June, having been named for the first show and then kept for the second. Gojira, described by theprp as a Grammy Award-winning French progressive metal band, open on 10 June.
For fans, the choice of night now carries a decision about the undercard as well as the date. For the band, two different openers widen the pool of buyers across three nights rather than asking the same crowd to come back. Lambgoat notes that the third show was revealed directly after the second, with Gojira named in place of Pierce The Veil.
Stadium Demand Without a New Album
None of this rests on new music. System of a Down are yet to record a full-length follow-up to their 2005 albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize, NME noted, and their first new music in 15 years came in 2020 with the singles Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoidz. Tankian has been direct about the prospects of another record. “There is no album that is written,” he said, as quoted by NME.
The demand is catalogue demand. The band recently marked the 25th anniversary of Toxicity with an exhibit at the Beyond the Streets gallery in Los Angeles, according to Consequence, which ranks the 2001 album No. 11 on its list of the 100 best sophomore albums of all time. The Rose Bowl run shows how far that catalogue now carries the band without a release cycle behind it.
The gap has a history. The band went on hiatus from 2006 to 2010, and guitarist Daron Malakian has said that making albums is what drives wedges between the members, NME noted in its report on the opening European show. Read that way, the live schedule is not a stopgap while a record is finished. It is the band’s working model: stadium runs built around songs the audience already knows, without the internal pressure of a new release.
That model also explains the pace of this week. A band with a new album to promote would usually announce a routing that follows the record into new markets. System of a Down have instead booked a handful of very large rooms in a few cities, and let demand in each one decide how many nights it gets. Pasadena is the clearest example yet: one night became three because the presale said so.
It is an unusual position for a stadium act. Most bands at this level tour to support a record. System of a Down tour on a body of work that stopped growing two decades ago, and the market keeps asking for more nights.
How to Get Rose Bowl Tickets
The presale opened on 23 October for fans who registered for access to the original date, according to theprp. The general on-sale for all three shows starts on Monday 26 October at 10am Pacific time, which is 5pm in the UK, through Ticketmaster.
Fans choosing a night should check the opener first: Pierce The Veil on 5 and 6 June, Gojira on 10 June. The 6 June date falls on a Sunday, while the 10 June show is midweek, which may matter for anyone travelling to Pasadena from outside Southern California.
What the Run Says About Rock’s Biggest Rooms
Heavy bands are filling the largest rooms available. RockCharts.News reported this month that Slipknot will play their biggest venues yet on a stadium tour of their own, and System of a Down’s Pasadena run points the same way: demand for established heavy acts is being met with fewer, larger shows rather than longer routings.
The band has not said whether more dates are possible after Monday’s general sale. What is already settled is the movement: one night announced on 19 October, three confirmed by 23 October, and the Rose Bowl booked for a band that has not released an album since 2005.
