A Vermont Songwriter’s Ten-Track Record Caps a Decade of Independent Albums, Singles and Covers

Maybe Magic is the sixth studio album in a catalogue that Ryan Sweezey has built independently since 2012. It arrived on 10 October 2025 after four singles spread across that year. The record holds ten songs in 36 and a half minutes of melodic alternative rock with folk-rock textures.

Ryan Sweezey’s title track Maybe Magic sits in our Soft Rock, Acoustic Rock playlist below. The Ryan Sweezey artist profile gathers every article about his music. Maybe Magic came to RockCharts.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Press play on the title track first, then read on for where the album sits in his catalogue.

Maybe Magic Is the Sixth Album in a Catalogue That Began With No Hollywood Star in 2012

The catalogue reads like a steady climb. No Hollywood Star came first in 2012 with 11 tracks, and Fall followed in 2013 with 12. Then came Starting Over in 2017, a shorter set of seven. After that, Meadowlark Sessions arrived in 2020 as the longest, at 15. Out Searching landed in 2022 with eight songs and returned in 2024 as a deluxe edition of 11. Maybe Magic is the sixth album in that line.

Sweezey is based in Vermont by way of Boston, and he fronts a live band, Ryan Sweezey and the Midnight Walkers. He has also been nominated eight times at the New England Music Awards. Every album on that list is independent, and the copyright line on Maybe Magic names the artist and nobody else. In other words, each record came out without a label behind it.

The gaps between albums were not quiet, either. From late 2023 through 2024, Sweezey released a run of cover singles that maps the ground this album works on. First, Train’s Drops of Jupiter came out in November 2023. Matt Nathanson’s Come On Get Higher followed in October 2024, then Tom Petty’s Walls (Circus) in November and U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For in December. A re-recorded Bartender (Decade Version), a song first heard on Starting Over, also joined the 2024 deluxe edition of Out Searching. So most of the covers point at the guitar-based melodic rock of the 1990s and 2000s.

Four Singles, a Covers Run and a Full Band Changed How the Record Holds Together

What changed on this record is the rollout and the arrangement. Sleepless Nights came out as a single on 21 March 2025. Black Widow followed on 9 May, Superhero on 25 July and a radio edit of The One Up There on 5 September. By the time the album arrived in October, four of its ten songs were already out. The artist’s own website describes the result as a full-band studio album. It also calls it the culmination of a decade of ideas revisited from new angles.

Moreover, the arrangements bear that out. The Cage, reviewing the album in November 2025, heard shimmering guitars and punchy drums on the opener, Lady Nomad. It also picked out the wide, open strumming on Sleepless Nights. Then it noted the soft strumming that opens the title track before the drums land. That is a band record built around a songwriter, not a solo record with overdubs.

Above all, the through-line is the subject matter. Across the ten songs, Sweezey writes about relationships, uncertainty, restless thoughts and the work of finding solid ground. The website pitches the music directly to hopeful overthinkers. The song titles follow that brief, too: Controlled Chaos, Sleepless Nights, I Honestly Miss You and Miles Away.

The track lengths are tight as well. Every song sits between 3:22 and 3:55, with Black Widow the shortest and Miles Away the longest. As a result, the album plays as a run of compact songs rather than long builds, which suits radio and playlist placement.

Matt Nathanson, Augustana and Train Map the Melodic Rock Ground This Record Works On

For reference points, three acts fit. Matt Nathanson is the clearest, since Sweezey has already recorded his Come On Get Higher, a 2007 single built on a big, plain chorus. Augustana placed Boston in 2005 with the same mix of piano-led melody and restless lyric. Meanwhile, Train gave the 2000s Drops of Jupiter, which Sweezey also covered. Its pairing of a story-led lyric with a full-band lift is close to what Maybe Magic aims for.

Overall, the album suits listeners who grew up on that era of melodic rock and want new songs in the same shape. Start with Lady Nomad, then let the record run to the title track at the end.

Where to Hear the Maybe Magic Album and Follow Ryan Sweezey Across Platforms

From the RockCharts.News Curator Team: “The singles are the obvious way in, but the one to hear next is The Invisible Girl. It sits third on the album and was never released on its own, so it is the clearest test of how deep the record goes.”

Hear Maybe Magic on Apple Music and Bandcamp. Follow Ryan Sweezey on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X, or visit his official website.
