1) QUIZBOY – Not Like The Others You Know
If you’re a fan of the ’90s, alternative rock, and hard rock, then QUIZBOY is the guy for you.
The Portland-based indie rock trio released their EP Not Like The Others You Know in April 2019. The EP features three tracks that are sure to get your heart pumping and your head moving. The album features a variety of musical styles, from grunge to garage rock and even hard rock.
After almost a year since the last release, “Bella,” Quizboy returns with an EP and teases an upcoming album slated for early 2023. On Bandcamp, the EP is a three-track release, one of which is a cover of The Decemberists, which happened to run into distribution issues, so it became a standalone single.
In “Not Like The Others You Know,” the A side discusses taking action against narcissistic abuse.
On the B side of the record, also my favourite one, “Brave a Storm,” the lyrics were intentionally written so that they could be interpreted from either the perspective of someone who is suicidal or from the perspective of someone taking care of someone who is suicidal, in order to demonstrate that both parties suffer from the same pain.
QUIZBOY is a must-listen if you’re looking for something new and exciting but still want to tap into your inner nostalgia. Check out their website and follow them on Spotify!
2) CINDY-LOUISE – Woman Of My Own Damn Mind
Cindy Louise is a rock singer-songwriter from the Netherlands, who has been making waves. She is known for her soulful voice and soft rock sound.
The single, “Woman Of My Own Damn Mind,” has an anthem-like quality to it that is sure to get stuck in your head. It’s catchy, anthemic, and the perfect song for your next road trip or to put in your playlist.
This song captures her signature sound perfectly: It’s got a classic rock feel, with a few different instruments playing along with the vocals at once. This is one of those songs that you can’t help but sing along to in your car while driving down the highway with the windows rolled down.
I personally loved the song when I heard it. Even though I’m not a woman, I felt really good and empowered listening to it! I think this is what we need more in the world; activism and people fighting for their rights!
This song is perfect for any playlist that needs some spice added to it! Check it out today on Spotify or visit Cindy’s website for more information about upcoming events!
3) MEHTA – We Cannot Fail (A Song For Ukraine)
If you’re looking for something to add to your collection that’s not just another pop song, look no further than We Cannot Fail (A Song For Ukraine) by MEHTA.
MEHTA is an Irish band that blends alternative rock with influences from soul and classic rock. Their sound is fresh and unique—I’d never heard anything like it before, but after listening to this song I was hooked!
Having written and performed the track for the project, Roger Mehta, came up with the idea after the artists were bitterly disappointed with the lack of support from global artists in order to raise awareness and provide assistance to the war-torn country of Ukraine and its citizens.
MEHTA is urging supporters to support the new track, which will donate ALL profits to the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal in light of Ukraine’s life-threatening long, cold winter and Christmas.
In addition, the song’s lyrics, which call for “peace for all humanity” and highlight the devastation caused to Ukrainian families, are hoped to raise awareness and funds for the Ukrainians. On December 6, Ukrainian MAZU Productions released a video with lyrics created during their work and living in war-torn Ukraine.
You can check out MEHTA’s single on Spotify or visit his website for more information about him and his music!
4) LUPIS – Probably Fine
As a three-piece grunge band from Rochester, NY, Lupis plays a variety of grunge music.
As a result of their authentic, organic, creative and passionate approach to songwriting and production with ‘Probably Fine,’ they offer more than just a nostalgic sound to their fans. It is our belief that you will be able to hear the emotions and energy that went into these recordings.
The first thing you’ll notice about the album is that it’s got some great 90’s rock vibes. The whole thing feels like it could’ve been released in the early 2000s, but it’s not dated at all. It’s got that grunge/punk sound you know and love—it’s gritty, there are loud guitars and drums, and the vocals are really raw.
There’s a lot of nostalgia here too: Lupis uses a lot of catchy hooks and riffs that are reminiscent of 90’s favourites like Pearl Jam or maybe even Nirvana. But they’re not copying anyone—they’re just doing what they do best: rockin’ out! And they do it really well.
From this album, my favourite track is ”Catsup Packet”, the song that has the most meaning for me. Since it reminds me of the days when Nirvana was everywhere, and I listened to music like this every day. That is a great song, it’s well produced, it’s well structured, and it’s well written
If you’re looking for something new and exciting to listen to on Spotify, check out LUPIS’ Probably Fine album! And make sure to also check out their website!
5) MINAMI DEGUCHI – Sirens And Stalkers
MINAMI DEGUCHI is a pop-punk artist from Australia, and his new album, Sirens And Stalkers, is out to prove that pop-punk is alive and well.
The new album Sirens And Stalkers showcase the artist’s talent through 11 tracks of indie-rock goodness. It can be best described as a mix between the sounds of classic rock bands such as Blink 182 and Bring Me The Horizon.
From tracks such as “Controlled” and “Screaming Sirens,” to emo-kid anthems like “Please Me (feat. Jemma Killen)” and “Hold your apologies” and melancholy ballads like “All These Lies”, the album can be viewed both as a diary of his bygone pain and as a portrayal of his musical journey.
With distorted guitars, reserved bass lines, gentle piano, rack-destroying drums, and occasional trap beats, Deguchi predominantly homages the rock sound of the 2000s (the era in which he was born).
In terms of my favourite song from the album, I would say it is “Controlled,” mainly because I could listen to it during a gym session or when driving late at night in the car. The song has an energetic feel to it. Additionally, it is a powerful piece of music. The mixing is outstanding as well as a great production. It’s just great to listen to!
Overall this album is great for anyone who enjoys listening to modern rock sounds mixed with pop-punk influences! If you’re looking for that, then check out his website, and follow him on Spotify!
6) BARISTA – Billions
The 80s rock sound is alive and well in the form of BARISTA, a hard-hitting band from Turkey that brings back the classic sound. The band brings together top studio musicians from some of the biggest bands in the world, including Judas Priest, Toto, Supertramp, Kenny Loggins’ band, and more. The second single from their current album is “Billions”.
Billion is a hard-hitting anthem that will get you pumped up and ready to take on the world. The vocals are powerful and passionate, but also have that smooth, melodic quality that we all love about classic rock. There’s just something about hearing a man sing with so much passion that makes you want to go out and do something amazing yourself.
You can really tell how much fun this band had recording this song because it sounds like they were having so much fun making it! The musicianship on this track is absolutely spectacular — especially when you consider how big these guys are. they make music with an amazing connection!
And if there’s one thing BARISTA knows how to do well, it’s written catchy hooks! Billions are the kind of song that just sticks in your head after you hear it once or twice—which is exactly what we want from our favourite artists!
I highly recommend checking out Barista’s website and following them on Spotify if you like what you read!
7) MOTHER VULTURE – Mother Knows Best
MOTHER VULTURE is a hard rock/punk band based in the United Kingdom. Their latest album, Mother Knows Best, is a great example of their style: loud, aggressive vocals with a hint of pop. The album features both male and female vocals, which adds to the variety of sounds on the record.
I was first introduced to Mother Vulture’s music by a friend, and I loved it so much I have been hooked ever since. Their sound is a unique blend of punk rock, hard rock, and alternative rock that is super catchy and has an anthem-like quality.
The band is from Bristol, UK and consists of four members: guitarist Brodie Maguire, drummer Matt West, vocalist Georgi Valentine, and bassist Chris Simpson.
I enjoy listening to all the songs on the album, but my favourite is the song ‘Mr Jones’. This is a powerful and energetic band, kind of like Led Zeppelin but much heavier than them. I can honestly say that once you hear this song, it will be impossible to forget it, it is a fantastic song as well as an amazing album!
These guys are definitely going places—so check out their website now and follow them on Spotify so you can keep up with everything they have coming up!
8) RISE DEFY – DCxPC Live Vol. 14 Presents Rise Defy Live At The Pie Shop DC
The members of Rise Defy come from the DC hardcore punk scene, including members of Scream, HR Band, Police & Thieves and more. The sound is influenced by hardcore, but also first-wave UK punk bands like The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, and Generation X, infused with soul and R&B.
They formed in response to Trumpism’s rising neo-fascism in late 2016, with the goal of rehumanizing experience through hook-laden, boundary-blending music.
It should be noted that the two songs on this EP were recorded live during a performance with Joe Wood of TSOL with his band “Change Today”.
In this case, DCxPC Live has embarked on a new venture into hand-crafted records using the lathe. The number of copies produced was only 40.
The EP has received positive reviews from many people who are fans of punk rock music or skater rock culture in general. Many people say that they appreciate how authentic it sounds compared to other albums they have heard in this genre before.
It doesn’t sound like someone else’s interpretation of what punk rock should sound like but rather like something you would hear if you went to see Rise Defy perform live yourself
If you’re interested in checking out more music by Rise Defy or just want more information about their tour schedule or upcoming releases, check out their website and follow them on Spotify.
