The NDX shake Groove: A Funk-Soul Turn From Alt-Rock Roots

A Calculated Departure From Alt-Rock Into the Unexpected Physical Groove of Neo-Soul and Funk

The first few bars of a track can tell you everything. Near Death Experience (NDX) dropped shake in March 2025. Its instant Neo-Soul and Funk groove felt like a surprise for a band rooted in alternative and art rock. Yet over a year later, the NDX shake groove still doesn’t read like a detour. Instead, it has settled in as an established part of the NDX catalogue, and it keeps finding new listeners.

You can listen to our full playlist which contains the artists’ music, and know more about the artist’s work by scrolling down the page.

Why NDX Leaned Into a Neo-Soul and Funk Groove for shake

For us at RockCharts.News, an artist’s willingness to step outside their usual sound is always worth a closer look. shake is a textbook example of that instinct paying off. At their core, Near Death Experience (NDX) build complex worlds from alternative rock, AOR, and art rock. That music tends to carry real weight and intellectual rigour. With shake, however, the band pivots into something immediately physical. The NDX shake groove rests on Neo-Soul and Funk foundations, coloured at the edges by a hint of psychedelia.

This move was no accident. As frontman Ian Whiteling puts it, the track reflects a “willingness to experiment and push boundaries.” This was not a band trying on a costume. Rather, it was a group of musicians flexing a different set of muscles. The result feels unexpected for NDX, yet it stays grounded in its new genres. The psychedelic element acts as a bridge, connecting the funk backbone to the band’s more adventurous rock leanings.

Breaking Down the shake Groove: Neo-Soul Chords, Funk Rhythms, Psychedelic Haze

So what does this blend actually sound like? Start with the jazz-inflected chord structures that define Neo-Soul. They lay down a rich harmonic bed for the song. Then inject the rhythmic pulse of classic Funk. The bassline and drums lock into a conversation about movement. That dialogue between harmony and rhythm gives shake its distinctive groove.

The track sidesteps simple imitation, too. The band infuses the framework with its own psychedelic leanings. That touch is never overt, yet it lingers in the periphery. You hear it in a swirling guitar effect, a washy keyboard pad, or a hazy reverb on the vocal. This is the ingredient that ties the shake groove back to the band’s alternative rock history. In effect, it is the sound of a group chasing an idea from the rehearsal room into the studio. Songwriting like this earns a permanent place in a repertoire.

RockCharts.News Curator Team: “For a rock band to pivot to a funk groove is one thing. To integrate it this thoroughly is another. With shake, the blend of Neo-Soul, Funk, and Psychedelia feels less like an experiment and more like a core part of NDX’s sound. The track proves the band’s musicality isn’t confined to one genre.”

How shake Found Its People — From D’Angelo Fans to Tastemaker Press

A track this distinct was always going to find its audience. Take the listeners who keep D’Angelo or Erykah Badu on rotation for their complex harmonic sensibilities. To them, shake speaks a familiar language. Its rhythmic drive and psychedelic leanings also sit in the same orbit as the funk-rock of Prince or the expansive psychedelic funk of Funkadelic. In short, it is built for people who like the head and the hips engaged in equal measure.

This isn’t just speculation, either. Since its release, shake has been singled out by discerning writers. The Big Takeover called it a “new musical high” even by the band’s own standards. Edgar Allan Poets framed it as funk-rock that “stomps through the door and dares you not to move.” And Cinematic Giants praised its “sweat-soaked soul energy” and sly nod to disco. Together, they show how the shake groove keeps earning attention long after release day.

Ian reflects on that longevity simply. “It’s fantastic to see it continue to resonate with listeners and critics alike, becoming a firm part of our established repertoire,” he says. Coming from a band with years of catalogue behind it, that isn’t wishful thinking. Instead, it is a documented reality for a song that keeps finding new ears.

Where to Hear shake and Follow NDX

If you missed shake the first time, now is the perfect moment to get acquainted. It is a standout from a band that isn’t afraid to explore its full range of influences. Better still, the NDX shake groove rewards repeat listens.

So step into the sound and dig into the wider NDX world. You can stream the single and explore the back catalogue on Spotify, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp. You can also browse merch and live dates on their official site.

Finally, keep up with Near Death Experience across platforms: YouTube channel, Instagram, Facebook, and X.
