Interview: Anastasia Elliot’s Masquerade Is Fully Art Rock With A Poignant Take On Modern Conformity

Will Lisil 26 September 2022

Alternative on art-rock at its very finest — that’s how the rock star Anastasia Elliot’s single Masquerade is. The lyrics talk about escaping the everyday conformist lifestyle and doing one’s own thing.

A grand proposition made in an extremely catchy, melodic, rock and alternative pop style. Anastasia Elliot’s song is composed in classic fashion, but it does break new ground, and also follows a similar path paved by other legendary journey-makers. Let’s know more about her through her interview with SuperPop.TV.

If you’re into classic/alternative rock, specifically U2 or Evanescence, but also enjoy top 40 on occasion, this song would be an excellent addition to your Spotify library.

Anastasia Elliot’s single, Masquerade, is about how impersonality and materialism have become common traits in modern society. Instead of at least trying to understand someone, we go on social media to post careless things that don’t matter and don’t represent us. We actually live a “Masquerade” life.

We try hard to appear as something we’re not. In the end, it doesn’t really make any difference because not a single person cares about you beyond what your appearance suggests.

If someone does care about you, they’ll put forth an effort to understand and respect you for who you are; this is what Elliot’s Masquerade is all about, and this is just a little introduction. In her highly anticipated full-length visual album La Petite Mort, purple-haired rock goddess Anastasia Elliot continues to be a trailblazer in the Indie Art Rock world. Masquerade calls for the death of the inauthentic self and challenges others to reveal their true selves.

On the inspiration behind “Masquerade”, Anastasia states the following;

“It is a commentary on desiring authenticity from others. Whether in relationships, friendships or in our current social media, celebrity and influencer culture. We are always navigating the “masquerade” of the world and trying to figure out what is real and what is fake. This song is an anthemic call for realness and owning our true selves. Nothing is “too much” when it comes to being who you truly are.”

Anastasia explores many different types of “masquerades” throughout the various pieces of visual content surrounding this release. Through body painting, Anastasia and famed artist Cacho Falcon explore an abstract interpretation of her feelings about her art through a very vulnerable and exposed painting. In response to Cacho’s question, she said that her metaphorical “mask” is:

“I feel like I always have to show excitement and positivity publicly around releasing my art when in reality, keeping up with social media and the immense weight and pressure of being an independent artist can be so stressful and overwhelming. Even though I can feel terrified, I never let that stop me from showing myself as best I can.”

Her music video continues the 13-song visual story that began with Cigarettes & Gasoline and Crash Landing, two sonic artworks which complement the project as a whole. The video was written and produced by Anastasia and aims to explore how our bodies are a mask for our inner emotions and feelings.

She was inspired by the tragic story of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen and chose to reverse these roles for the video. Vintage graphics of body parts are overlaid on the performance and symbolize what is going on inside.

Overall, Anastasia Elliot is a rock star, super talented and bold artist who deserves your total attention. Now it’s your turn, to check it out, visit her website, watch her music video, watch her interview and follow the artist on Spotify.
