Perpetual Violence Machine Enters the Thrash Conversation with Hydra Vein's Tightest Spread Yet

Five Songs Inside a One Minute Band, on a Catalogue That Once Ran to Seven

Every song on Perpetual Violence Machine runs between four minutes twelve and five minutes twelve. That is a spread of one minute across the whole EP. On the Hydra Vein recordings that made the band’s name, the same measurement runs to four minutes and one second.

Hydra Vein have music in the playlist below, and the band’s full run of coverage sits on the Hydra Vein profile. Perpetual Violence Machine reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. What the Old Hydra Vein Catalogue Looks Like in Numbers

The band formed in Brighton in 1987, and their most-played catalogue still sits in that first run. Measured across the ten tracks that stream most, the shortest is Misanthropic at three thirteen and the longest is Harlequin at seven fourteen. Guillotine runs three twenty eight, The House three thirty four, Right to Die seven nine and Pro Patria five fifty six.

That is a catalogue with two distinct habits. It writes short, blunt tracks that finish before three and a half minutes, and it writes long ones that pass seven. The middle is occupied, but it is not where the band lives.

Read as a shape rather than as a sound, the pattern is typical of the late eighties thrash run. A record was a sequence with peaks in it, and a seven minute track was where a band showed what it could arrange rather than only what it could play fast.

It also gave a listener somewhere to enter. The short tracks were the way in and the long ones were the reason to stay, and the two jobs were done by different songs.

What Changed on Perpetual Violence Machine, and What the Narrower Spread Costs

The 2025 EP does neither of those things. Its shortest track is the title track at four twelve. Its longest is Black Slammer at five twelve. Nothing else moves outside that.

Placed against the older catalogue the change is stark. Three of those ten most-played tracks are shorter than anything on the new EP. Three are longer than anything on it. Only four of the ten fall inside the range the current band writes in.

So the spread has narrowed by roughly a factor of four, from four minutes and one second to one minute flat. That is not a small adjustment in sequencing. It is a different idea about what a track is for.

It changes how the EP is likely to be played, too. A record with a three minute opener and a seven minute closer invites a listener to pick, because the two ends serve different moods and different amounts of time. A record where every track occupies the same slot does not offer that choice.

What the tighter band buys is consistency. Five tracks that all run between four and five minutes hold a single tempo range and a single level of density, so the EP plays as one statement rather than as a sequence with a centrepiece. For a band returning after decades that is defensible: it removes the comparison to one specific old track and asks to be judged as a unit.

What it costs is contrast. The old catalogue used Misanthropic and Harlequin as opposite poles, and a listener who came to Hydra Vein for that range will not find it here. Nothing on the EP functions as the short one, and nothing functions as the long one.

The Through-Line, and Where to Hear Perpetual Violence Machine

The through-line survives in the writing rather than in the running order. The material still holds its tempo without hurrying, and the arrangements still resolve rather than fade, which is what connected the long tracks to the short ones on the early records.

RockCharts.News curator team: “The number that matters is the spread, not the total. A one minute range across five tracks means the band settled the shape of the EP before the songs were finished, and on a catalogue that used to run from three thirteen to seven fourteen that is the clearest signal of how this line-up works.”

Two comparisons place the run without overstating it. Acid Reign came out of the same British thrash wave and returned decades later with new material, and their later records show a similar compression toward a middle length. Sacrilege followed a comparable path from the eighties into a reformed second run. Neither comparison is a claim about placement. Both describe a catalogue shape.

Perpetual Violence Machine is on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer, with the full EP on YouTube. The band post on Facebook and Instagram.
