Two Old Bandmates, a Robot Called Kyle and an Eight-Track Debut That Still Leads

All eight songs on They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars sit in the Spotify top ten of You Me & Kyle, two years after the album came out on 15 October 2024. Flying Cars holds first place, and the other two spots go to singles released since.

You Me & Kyle’s songs are in the playlist below, and the band’s full run of coverage sits on the You Me & Kyle artist profile. They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars reached RockCharts.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Play it from the top, then read on for how it sits in the catalogue.

You Me & Kyle Built Their Catalogue on Decades of Songs From The Executives and Two Solo Records

That is an unusual shape for an independent band’s catalogue. Debut albums usually fade behind whatever came next. This one still carries the run, and the records around it explain why.

The history is longer than the release date suggests. Tony Sharpe and Henry Hutton met in high school at a Star Trek convention and found they shared a love of rock. Later, the pair wrote and performed more than 60 original songs with The Executives, a North Carolina alternative rock band.

Two solo records came next. Sharpe’s project Accidental Mistakes sat on the shelf for a decade before it was recorded at Genuine Music Chicago and released in 2023. Then Hutton followed with his first solo album, I’m Not That Guy, in 2024.

You Me & Kyle formed in 2024 and moved quickly. Running Away arrived on 10 September, The Side Of The Road on 20 September and Flying Cars on 1 October. Two weeks later, the album followed on Middle Class Productions, an independent label that also released Hutton’s solo work.

What Changed When Two Old Bandmates Built a Debut Album Across Two States and Two Studios

The biggest change is the line-up. You Me & Kyle is a duo, and the third name is a joke the band commits to. On their own account, Kyle is a robot, and only Sharpe, Hutton and Kyle play on the recordings. Reel 360 traced the name to a virtual drummer in their recording software.

The second change is distance. Sharpe, a North Carolina native, lives in Columbus, Ohio, while Hutton lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hutton usually sends a demo with a basic melody and guitar part, and Sharpe builds it out in his own studio. Back when the pair started, studio time and equipment cost too much for a record like this. Home studios changed that.

The third change is the writing itself. The band credits Accidental Mistakes with changing the way Sharpe approached songwriting, and the album is where that change shows. The songs are short and direct. In total, the eight tracks run for about 26 minutes, and none lasts longer than four minutes.

Live, the duo expands. Guitarist Rainer Ng and drummer Bill Goodwin join them on stage, so the studio project becomes a four-piece band when it plays out.

The Through-Line Running From The Executives to the Flying Cars Album and Beyond

The constant is the sound. Sharpe’s vocals are raw and unpolished, and Hutton’s smooth backing vocals sit underneath them. Hutton’s bass lines drive the songs forward, and the band jokes that a few B minor chords finish the recipe.

Reel 360 heard the same thing when the album arrived in October 2024. It singled out crisp guitar riffs, punchy basslines and vocal harmonies that flow together, and it named The Side Of The Road as the standout. It also framed the band as proof that indie rock has no age limit.

That mix places the record in a familiar lineage. Fountains of Wayne built tight power-pop songs on crunchy guitars and stacked harmonies, and the album pairs a rough lead with a clean backing voice in the same way. Jimmy Eat World pushed alternative rock forward on a driving rhythm section and big melodic choruses, and Hutton’s bass does that driving job across this album.

The catalogue since has kept the formula. Killing Me followed in May 2025 and She Knows in August 2025. Neither has displaced the album tracks at the top of the band’s listening order.

Where to Stream the Flying Cars Album and Follow You Me & Kyle From Raleigh

RockCharts.News’s curator team: “They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars works as a run, not a lead single with filler. The joke in the band name hides a careful record: eight songs, no wasted minute, and a running order listeners still follow.”

For listeners who like guitar-led indie rock with a sense of humour, They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars is the place to start. It takes less than half an hour, and the order matters.

Stream the album in the player above, then follow You Me & Kyle on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and the official site.
