A Secret No More: Grunge Icons Form Supergroup 3rd Secret

A new supergroup, 3rd Secret, surprised the rock community. They materialized seemingly out of nowhere, releasing a full-length debut album with no prior fanfare. The project brings together an impressive lineup of grunge royalty. It features members of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The surprise release of the 3rd Secret debut album is one of rock history’s most unexpected and exciting collaborations. It proves the Seattle sound remains alive and continues to evolve.

The album suddenly appeared on streaming services. This left fans and music journalists scrambling to learn about the secret project. The lineup features a who’s who of ’90s alternative rock. The band’s existence had been kept completely secret. So, their music’s arrival was a genuine shock. This stealth release strategy recalls an earlier music industry era. It relied on the music’s power and its creators’ legacy to generate organic buzz.

Who Is In 3rd Secret? A Lineup of Legends

The collective pedigree of 3rd Secret is nothing short of breathtaking. The band features bassist Krist Novoselić (Nirvana) and guitarist Kim Thayil (Soundgarden). It also includes drummer Matt Cameron, who played in both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. This trio alone represents a foundational pillar of the grunge movement that took over the world in the early 1990s.

However, the supergroup is more than just a trio. Guitarist Bubba DuPree also joins the lineup. He is known for his work with the influential hardcore band Void. Vocalists Jillian Raye (from Novoselić’s project, Giants in the Trees) and Jennifer Johnson complete the group. This diverse group of musicians brings many influences. They create a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly new. Jillian Raye and Jennifer Johnson share vocal duties. This provides a dynamic melodic layer. It sets 3rd Secret apart from the members’ past projects.

The Surprise Self-Titled Debut Album

The 3rd Secret debut album is self-titled and has 11 tracks. It powerfully introduces the band’s sound. The album was quietly released on streaming platforms and credited to In an Instant Records. The lead track, “I Choose Me”, immediately establishes the album’s tone with its bluesy, driving riff and powerful, harmonized vocals. The song highlights the intricate interplay between Kim Thayil’s signature guitar and the rock-solid rhythm section. This section includes Krist Novoselić and Matt Cameron.

Throughout the album, the band explores a variety of musical textures. Tracks like “Liar’s Lair” and “Somewhere In Time” blend heavy rock elements with folk and psychedelic undertones. Legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino helmed the production. It sounds raw and immediate, capturing live performance energy. Jack Endino famously engineered Nirvana’s debut album Bleach. He brings an authentic, unvarnished quality to this recording. This allows the musicianship to shine. The album feels less like a calculated studio creation. Instead, it sounds like a passionate, spontaneous jam session. Old friends and new collaborators made this music.

A Secret History and Ongoing Future

While the album’s release was a surprise, hints of the collaboration had surfaced earlier. Krist Novoselić previously tweeted that he was “busy” with new music. However, he gave no hint of the project’s scale or the other musicians involved. The album was reportedly recorded over a series of secret sessions at Murky Slough Studios in Washington. This secret approach allowed the band to develop their sound. They avoided the pressures and expectations that typically follow such a high-profile collaboration.

Crucially, 3rd Secret is not a one-off project. In June 2023, the band followed up their debut with a second surprise album, titled The 2nd 3rd Secret. This continued output confirms the group is an ongoing creative entity. They are dedicated to exploring their shared musical chemistry. The second album builds on the first’s foundation. It further solidifies their unique sound. It also proves these iconic musicians still have much to say.

The formation of 3rd Secret is a testament to the enduring power of creative connection. It’s a project born from shared history and a mutual desire to make music. They do this without the baggage of their legendary pasts. For fans of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, the 3rd Secret debut album is more than just a new record. It’s a gift. It’s a continuation of a legacy. And it’s an exciting new chapter from some of rock’s most revered artists.

The excitement around this supergroup highlights broader energy within the genre. Other groups also deliver a fresh take on classic alternative rock.
